Merriman's positive test was "definitely for steroids … not one of those supplement deals," said a source with knowledge of Merriman's suspension earlier Monday. Both the initial A sample and backup B sample came back positive, Mortensen reported.

Merriman, 22, was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year last season and started in the Pro Bowl after recording 54 tackles and 10 sacks. He also finished with five passes defended and two forced fumbles. Through six games this season, Merriman was second on the Chargers with 5½ sacks.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The trial of track coach Trevor Graham netted steroids prosecutors another guilty verdict and a public admission of cheating from a gold-medal winning athlete.

The jury convicted Graham on Thursday of one count of lying to federal investigators about his relationship to an admitted steroids dealer but deadlocked on the other two charges, when at least one juror had serious doubts about the credibility of the prosecution's star witness.


Although Graham did not testify at the trial, five of his former athletes, including Olympic gold-medal winner Antonio Pettigrew, did.

It was Pettigrew's first public admission of drug use and has placed the gold medal he won as part of the 4x400-meter relay team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in jeopardy.

New England Patriots strong safety Rodney Harrison has been suspended for the first four regular-season games after violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, the league said early Saturday.

The 34-year-old Harrison, suspended without pay, will be eligible to return to the Patriots' active roster following the team's Oct. 1 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He acknowledged the suspension in a late Friday night conference call, admitting that he obtained human growth hormone but said that he had never taken steroids.

NEW YORK (AP) - Disgraced former world record holder Tim Montgomery said he took testosterone and human growth hormone before the Sydney Olympics, and does not deserve the gold medal he won in the 400-meter relay.


The admission was made during an interview scheduled to air Tuesday night on HBO television.

"I have a gold medal that I'm sitting on that I didn't get with my own ability," Montgomery said in the interview.




Montgomery also said in the interview that he signed a $98,000 shoe contract with Asics while still in college, a violation of U.S. college sports governing body NCAA's rules.


Montgomery is currently in prison after being convicted of check fraud and heroin trafficking.
The sprinter is serving a 46-month sentence for helping his former coach, Olympic champion Steve Riddick, and others cash $1.7 million in stolen and counterfeit checks. He then must serve five years for selling heroin to an informant. That arrest came while Montgomery was awaiting sentencing on the check fraud charge

Dwight Gooden denied accusations by steroid peddler Kirk Radomski that Radomski twice took urine tests for him in the early 1990s. Radomski made the claim in an interview with ESPN's "Outside the Lines" and in his new book "Bases Loaded," due out this week.


Gooden has admitted his cocaine problems of the past. The former Mets ace was suspended for 28 days in 1987 and failed drug tests twice in 1994, but was insistent that Radomski never took a drug test for him. Radomski could not be reached for comment.






Former Yankees outfielder David Justice denied allegations made by Radomski that he bought performance-enhancing drugs from him.

Justice was implicated in the Mitchell Report by Radomski, who told ESPN on Sunday that he sold Justice HGH. Radomski said he drove Justice to the airport after the 2000 World Series and handed Justice a box containing steroids and HGH.

Among the evidence was a positive test for amphetamines in 2006 in a urine sample Bonds gave to Major League Baseball.


Steve Hoskins, Bonds' childhood friend and personal assistant, tape recorded a 2003 conversation at the Pac Bell clubhouse with Anderson in which injections are discussed.


According to records prosecutors took from BALCO, Bonds tested positive on three separate occasions in 2000 and 2001 for the steroid methenelone in urine samples; he also tested positive two of those three times for the steroid nandrolone. Prosecutors want to use those test results to show Bonds lied when he told a grand jury in December 2003 that he never knowingly used steroids.

In addition, a government-retained scientist, Dr. Don Catlin, said he found evidence that Bonds used the designer steroid THG upon retesting a urine sample Bonds supplied as part of baseball's anonymous survey drug testing in 2003, when the designer drug was non yet detectable. Federal investigators seized them in 2004 from the private laboratory used by Major League Baseball before they could be destroyed, which the players were promised.

Catlin said the sample also tested positive for Clomid and foreign testosterone.


Included in the evidence was a letter from baseball independent drug administrator Bryan Smith that Bonds tested positive for an amphetamine during a drug test on July 7, 2006. There also was a letter from baseball commissioner Bud Selig to Bonds that Aug. 1 informing him of the positive test and telling him that he will be subject to six more tests over a one-year period.
