A Harlem nurse who told cops she killed her abusive, coke-fiend husband with a ceramic statue was a battered woman acting in self-defense, her lawyers said Monday.

Donna Cobb, 42, suffered unending abuse at the hands of her husband of 10 years, Kevin Cobb, the lawyers said as her trial got underway.

Prosecutors painted a different picture.

"Kevin Cobb may not have been a husband or father any of us would want to have," Assistant District Attorney Michele Bayer told the jury.

Still, she added, the father of their six children didn't deserve his fate.

"She plunged [a] knife 3 inches into his chest," Bayer said.

Prosecutors attacked Donna Cobb's credibility, pointing out that she gave three accounts of the slaying, initially saying she bashed Kevin with the elephant statue.

The truth, they said, is that the murder weapon was a butter knife.

Kevin Cobb, a 39-year-old cocaine addict, had served time in prison before returning home to his wife and their six kids, her lawyer Earl Ward said.

A Harlem nurse accused of murdering her abusive husband sobbed on the witness stand Monday as she apologized for the stabbing.

"I just wanted him to stop choking me," Donna Cobb testified at her Manhattan Supreme Court trial. "I didn't think he was going to die. That was not my intention - I mean, I loved him."

"I'm sorry," she gasped after describing a 3 a.m. life-and-death struggle with her cocaine-addicted ex-con husband, Kevin Cobb.

The Nov. 11, 2006, battle was sparked by a fight at a party earlier that night.

Cobb, 42, said she "poked" the father of her six children with a butter knife lying on a bedside table because he was screaming that he would kill her.

Prosecutors said the "poke" was a 3-inch deep stab wound that penetrated Kevin Cobb's heart.

A Harlem nurse's aide was acquitted of murdering her abusive husband after testifying to years of domestic abuse.

"It was clear to the jury she was a battered woman," attorney Earl Ward said Wednesday of Donna Cobb's self-defense claim.

"There was evidence she was being choked. She had marks on her neck, and he had scratches on his hands."

"She was fighting desperately for her life," Ward said.

Cobb grabbed a butter knife from a bedside table and plunged it into cocaine-addled Kevin Cobb's heart when he returned home on a night in November 2006 and attacked her.
