This is probably one of the finest sci-fi universes ever. Far better than Star Wars or Star Trek. I've read all the books up to the last two in the chronological line Frank Herbert developed, the last of the pair I'm beginning now. After that, I'll be starting on the interquel tetralogy written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson dubbed "Heros of Dune" that takes place during the time between Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. The final two books in that series have been postponed for a trilogy that details the formation of the Bene Gesserit, Spacing Guild, Mentat, and Suk Doctor schools along with House Corrino's solidification of power. Brian and Kevin have done an outstanding job with expanding the Dune universe and I eat up every new book they produce. If you're into sci-fi then by all means give these books a look.

The Legends of Dune Trilogy
Here we read about the events that lead to the Great Butlerian Jihad where mankind fights to free itself from the oppression of "thinking machines" ruled by the computer network Omnius. *coughskynetcough*
We also see the birth of the "Free Men" of Arrakis, later to be known as the fanatical army of Paul Muad'Dib, the Fremen.

The House Trilogy
10,000 years into the future, the universe is ruled by noble families who vie for power and influence, chief of which is control over the production of the Spice Melange, manufactured from the desert world of Arrakis which is vital to space travel. In this trilogy, we witness the formation of the powers that be that we are introduced to originally by Frank Herbert in his first novel. Leto assumes his place as Duke, the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen becomes the diseased floating fat man we know, and Shaddam Corrino IV takes the Padishah throne as emperor. Alot of subterfuge in this trilogy.

Frank Herbert's Dune Chronicles
This series spans close to 5,000 years with the rise of Paul Muad'Dib and his jihad to the founding of the empire of the God Emperor by his son Leto II, who rules for the next 3,500 years as a hybrid human/sandworm. His tyrannical rule and famine time forces many humans to flee into the depths of space in The Scattering, later to begin trickling back into the old empire after his death. Along with them, a devastating order of women that mimics the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood called Honored Matres, who destroy everything in their path, arrives as well. Their recklessness, however, is merely a means to hoard as much as they can, as they are in fact fleeing from a powerful and ancient enemy.

Heroes of Dune series
Haven't read these yet, so I don't know much about them. They take place during the time of Paul's absence after being blinded in an assassination attempt.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c7/PaulCover.jpg

Half of the story takes place between Frank Herbert's Dune (1965) and Dune Messiah (1969) as Paul’s Jihad rages, Shaddam seeks to regain his throne and Princess Irulan accepts the "task of building the legend of Muad'Dib." She in turn chronicles Paul's early years (between the 2001 Brian Herbert/Anderson prequel House Corrino and Dune), which feature "his friendship with Duncan and Gurney and Duke Leto's War of Assassins against Grumman." Per Wiki

The novel opens with the Lady Jessica back on Arrakis following the disappearance of her son Emperor Paul-Muad'Dib, who according to Fremen custom has walked into the desert to die after he is blinded. The story of the friendship between Paul Atreides and Bronso Vernius is also told.

Oh yes, I'm a fan. For people who saw the film and thought, "no way" give the books a chance. David Lynch's effort was very noble, considering he tried to squeeze a MILLION books into one film.

Work is in progress of a new big screen movie that is promised to be faithful to the book. I think they finally got a clue after The Lord of the Rings was such a huge success, where they actually did an outstanding job of staying as faithful as they could to the books. I hope they can pull it off!

I thought the first book was fantastic but found myself unable to get into the 2nd, so I never read further. Liked the movie too. Despite its faults the storyline is compelling enough to make it watchable today for more than just lulz value. Can't say that about too many other movies of that era.

Ok, some lulz, lile sting in those fucking space speedo's :lol

Hey, I don't mind the space speedos :lol at all! :brows They had to have something for the girly nerds! I still love the Dune film, maybe because like Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), I saw the film first as a kid, then read the books.

Yeah, I still watch the Lynch film on occasion since I have it on dvd. I too saw the movie before I read the book, and thought they both kicked ass, but of course the book curb stomps the movie with ease.

My first thought when Sting walked out of the steam bath thingie wearing that winged cod piece was that it was about to start shooting ping pong balls or something. The lulz closely followed. :lol

Yes, for sci fi, Philip K Dick is another author to look at thumbsup

His novels inspired movies such as Minority Report, Blade Runner, Total Recall and some other ones.

Dune was a spectacular franchise, poorly rendered on film, but still epic in every way a Science Fiction classic should be. Herbert's original novel is so rich and technically intriguing (Herbert was a self-trained writer and ecologists of sorts) that it borders on masterpiece.

The only modern Science Fiction writer I can think of at this level is David Brin. I think the Uplift saga will someday be immortalized in a film franchise.

Those who know Science Fiction remember that Star Trek was originally "Wagon Train to the Stars" - a twentieth-century-man-in-space thing. It was a great concept that turned into another successful franchise, but was not nearly at the level of Dune (or most other serious Science Fiction) in terms of literary accomplishment and significance.

[As for Star Wars... I only wish the Sith had vanquished the anal-retentive and fastidious Jedi. I hate to see complacent and unoriginal "heroes" win the battle, let alone the war. And, Princess Leia. Now there's one tight-ass that needed some reaming early on in the series. But, I digress...]

If you read the original Dune and then watch the film variants, you will be disappointed.
