For example, Unesco's 2008 Global (Education) Monitoring Report shows that 774 million youth and adults are illiterate worldwide.
The majority of them are women and most of them live in sub-Sahara Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Closer home, the latest information from a survey by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Adult Education, indicates that 7.8 million youth and adults are illiterate.
That represents about one-third of the national population -- a sad testimony to the fact that the national educational programmes have not achieved the desired results.
