For those who appreciate H.P. Lovecraft, its sometimes enjoyable to see a reference to his works in movies or shows.

-The Necronomicon in Army Of Darkness,

-Pickman's Model on Night Gallery

what do you find to be the best movie made related or based on a H.P. Lovecraft story. Three come to mind for me.

1). From Beyond (1986) starring Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton. It was based on a short story of the same name by Lovecraft but they ran with it very well and to me the ending was what lovecraft would have approved of.
Jeffrey Combs does a incredible rendition of Crawford.

2) The Resurrected 1991 starring John Terry and Jane Sibbett and Chris Sarandon. Based on the story "The case of Charles Dexter Ward". A very good modern day adaptation with a few changes. Terry plays an investigator which differs from the story but it flows. Chris Sarandon does a very good job playing Charles and his forfather Joseph Curwin/Dr Ash.

3) Dagon. Based on the story The shadow over Innsmouth. Sorry I don't have much info on this one but they show it on sci fi every so often. Somewhat different than the story with a different twist at the end but still the same style of horrific realization for the main character.

If you know other movies please post. Also include Lovecraft inspired movies as well like "In the mouth of maddness" which had a very good Lovecraftian feel.

Only because it was one of Karloff's last roles and I love AIPs output from the 60s, I'll have to say "Die Monster Die" based on Lovecraft's "Colors from Space". And oh yeah, Nick ("You dirty rats!) Adams is in it too!

I think I may have seen die monster die. Follows the colour of space a bit. Wife is locked up because she is truning and so is Karloff due to the "chunk" which is blighting the farm karloff and the wife.

Theres this cool scene where there are strange screams coming from the conservatory/greenhouse and that big, big mutant is in there.

The end is kind of lame...Karloff falling to peices and such.

Nice poster pic Taylor.

The Reanimator was good Dr Bloor. Once again Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West and Barbara Crampton as the eye candy. I loved all the dark humor references in it including the "horney" deadhead dean and herbert getting pissed off at all the noise his mistakes are making.

The bride of reanimator I won't touch but mention.

The third (Return of Reanimator)....well......if you watch the end credits you see a reanimated penis trading blows with a prison rat in a fight......

why God why.......

I wish they would make a "In the Mountains of Madness" movie. Just please don't have Will Smith as the survivor of the expedition.

I haven't seen all of these, but of the ones I have, I do like "Re-Animator."

It's a campy take on the short story, but it takes a life of its own and is quite enjoyable.

The "Shadow Over Innsmouth" is probably my favorite Lovecraft story, and "Dagon" is a fairly good remake, but I would be eager to see a film done that is completely faithful to the original (set in the early 20th century, lone protagonist, etc.) The main reason that story is compelling is because the character's motivation is fairly realistic for a person reading it - "this place is fucked up, let me get away ASAP." There's no "save the love interest and/or world" type of climax injected into it.

That silent film remake of "Call of Cthulhu" was also very well done for a low-budget venture. They really made it seem like a 1920's film in many ways, and it is genuinely creepy in its own right.

I really liked the stop-motion Cthulhu in "Call of Cthulhu." Genuinely creepy. Though it's not by any means a Lovecraft adaptation, and it's not really a good movie, "Equinox" is pretty entertaining. It foreshadows the Evil dead films in many ways, has a stop-motion Cthulhu, the Necronomicon, and Fritz Leiber as a mad professor.

Ahhh "Equinox"...I have that jem on DVD.....

Nothing like a bunch of late thirty year olds playing fressman college students:lol.

Scared the shit out of me as a young pup. yeah that book I think was called the Necronomicon. Loved the rip in reality that Herb, the sales director from "WKRP in Cinncinati"(Frank Bonner), was half in and half out of. I think the special effects were lame even then.

I always thought that Bruce Cambell would make a good "Asmodiou the park ranger".

Reanimator is great - mostly because of Combs but I also enjoyed the humorous interpretation of the story and the "Psycho" rip-off score.

Bride sucked but I actually enjoyed Return of Reanimator - talk about over the top!
