My lady knows a shitload of folks out there. Kaiser Permanente is a GIGANTIC medical corporation and employs thousands and thousands of people. Joanne knows a surprizingly large number of well known people as well. The show COPS began in Portland, Oregon, started by Sherriff John Bunnell- who is a good friend of her family. (Her father was a brigade chief for the Portland Fire Department for many many years)
Bunnell is one of his buddies. The actor Sam Elliot lives not far from her parents and they are friends with him as well. (She says her mother flirts with him when she sees him at the grocery store- hahaha!)

Joanne reads the Oregonian online every morning and she often recognizes people in the various news reports. While watching COPS episodes that are filmed in Portland, its fucking hilarious during the chases through town- Joanne pipes up, "Their coming up to 122nd... theres a gas station just around the corner".... and the cop slides around the corner- and there it is- a gas station. haha! "Yep, theres the grocery store by my old job, the train station is just to the left..." and of course, as the cop is chasing the niggers, you can see the train rolling overhead on the bridge. lol The woman knows her hometown. She is used to driving in the civilian equivalent of the Daytona 500- she gets so pissed off driving here in Mayberry! lol "Goddamn it! Move motherfucker! Put your seatbelt on baby, time for some city driving..." haha!

I didn't know Oregon even had a death penalty.
It's probably the same as it is here in California.
If you are sentenced to death here in California, you are ten times more likely to die of old age while sitting on death row than you are to ever be executed.
And that's at about $60,000 a year per head for these assholes to finish out their lives on death row.
Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollars in court costs and legal fees each one of these assholes cost the taxpayers with their appeals year after year.

Unfortunately, that's most likely true.

Oregon does have capital punishment but the last time anyone was put to death was in 1994. Anybody sentenced to death who wants to fight it can do so almost indefinitely. Even those who don't fight it languish for decades on death row.

There is currently a convicted murderer who has been on Oregon's death row for 20+ years who killed again while in prison (his cellmate) and now wants to be offed...wants it over and done with. But there are unending "competency" hearings and appeals from 3rd parties and it remains to be seen how long this episode will be drawn out.

Competency hearings are required when an inmate says he wants to die. Before being put to death the convicted must show he is sane as it would be cruel to execute an insane person...and anybody who says they want to die must be insane and therefore our enlightened society is obligated to treat that individual with counseling, etc, until he no longer wants to die. Then we can kill him.
