4 Shot Near Times Square Amid Reports of Unruly Crowds

Four people were shot in three episodes in Midtown Manhattan -- two near Times Square and the other near Pennsylvania Station -- and the police said they arrested 54 people as rowdy crowds roamed the area in the waning hours of Sunday and early Monday.

No one had been arrested in any of the shootings by midmorning Monday. The four people who were shot were in stable condition at hospitals in Manhattan, the police said.

The police said they had assigned extra manpower to Times Square on Sunday evening because they were concerned about crowds leaving the New York International Auto Show, which opened on Friday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, on 11th Avenue near West 34th Street.

“There’s a lot of troublemakers that go to the auto show each year,” said Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne, the chief spokesman for the Police Department, “and sometimes they get in fights afterward.”

But the auto show closed at 7 p.m., and it was not clear whether the trouble later in the night involved people who had migrated from the Javits Center toward Times Square and Penn Station.

The police said the first episode was reported at 12:08 a.m. It involved a 21-year-old man who was shot in the leg on Eighth Avenue near West 41st Street. The man, who was not identified, was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center. The police said he was in stable condition.

Bystanders said they heard two shots; the police said preliminary reports indicated that only one shot had been fired.

Midtown NYC Mayhem Leads To Dozens Of Arrests
4 People Shot, Dozens Arrested Monday In Mile-Long Stretch Of Manhattan Near Times Square

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Four people were shot and dozens of people were arrested Monday in a mile-long stretch of Manhattan near Times Square in mayhem that police said was connected to the start of the city's annual auto show.

A group of youths who attended the New York International Auto Show at the Jacob A. Javits Center ran amok in midtown Manhattan.

Chief NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne said additional officers were on patrol because similar problems have happened during past auto shows.

"Young men looking for trouble afterwards," he said. "There has been incidents over the years. It's something we watch over and we prepare for it in advance."

Police made 54 arrests, mostly on charges of disorderly conduct. Police weren't sure how many of those arrested knew each other, or what sparked the shootings that began shortly after midnight.

A man was shot in the ankle at Eighth Avenue and 40th Street around 12:10 a.m. Shortly after, a woman was hit with a BB gun several blocks northeast at Seventh Avenue and 51st Street.

About two hours later, two women were shot -- one in the elbow and another in the thigh -- near Seventh Avenue and 34th Street.

The shootings represent the second major instance of gunfire in the area in recent months, where police have worked for years to stop petty crimes and hustlers targeting tourists. Police and a street hustler armed with a machine pistol exchanged shots in December in Times Square -- shattering a Broadway theater ticket window and scattering crowds -- before police shot the man dead.

Police speak to victims of a mob that shot several people in Times Square...

The latest outbreak of midtown mayhem - which the mayor Monday declared an episode of "wilding" - resurrected memories of the "bad old days of the 1970s."

Fifty-six yooofs were arrested or given summonses after hundreds of thugs rampaged through Times Square and Herald Square on Easter Sunday night.

Four people - a man and a woman in Times Square and two women outside Macy's - were shot in what cops say is becoming an annual tradition.

"It came out of nowhere. I just saw people running and I got hit," said Keanu Griffin, 18, a senior at Aspiration High  in Brooklyn, who was shot in the thigh.

She said she and five friends were heading to the subway after eating at T.G.I. Friday's when they were engulfed by the melee.

Her dad, Dennis Griffin, 42, said more should have been done to protect pedestrians.

"If it's a regular routine on Easter, they should have had enough cops up there to stop whatever it is going on," he said Monday.

"She just got hurt from going to have a good time. On 42nd St. On Easter!"

None of the injuries was life-threatening. The three women were believed to be bystanders, police sources said.

"This city is going to hell. People shouldn't have to worry about being shot, especially in midtown," said a fuming Tena Hemingway, 23, of Brooklyn, whose 19-year-old sister, Iasia Manson, was shot in the elbow on 34th St.

A witness to the Herald Square gunplay, who did not want to give his name, called the scene "pretty crazy."

"It was like 'pop,' real loud - then silence. Then another 'Pop, pop, pop, pop.' Everyone started running down the street, screaming, 'They're shooting, they're shooting!'"

Cops shut down some of the city's most famous streets in Monday's wee hours and climbed into the iconic Macy's awning, looking for stashed weapons.

Easter night has brought violent clashes to the Times Square area since 2003, terrifying tourists, pedestrians and business owners. In 2006, three people were stabbed. Last year, there were 27 arrests.

Sunday's gunfire upped the ante, and the specter of marauding hooligans running amok in midtown brought back memories of Times Square in seamier, scarier times.

Mayor Bloomberg called it "a bunch of gang members wilding" and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer warned budget cuts would lead to "reliving the bad old days of the 1970s."

"There's a bunch of people that think it's cute to go out and to run around and to cause chaos," Bloomberg said. "We're not going to stand for it."

Several police sources said many of the youths had attended the annual car show at the Jacob Javits Center before heading for the Crossroads of the World to look for trouble.

It was not clear that the violence was closely tied to gangs: only two of the 33 yoofs arrested were in a gang database, cops said.

The NYPD had beefed up patrols in anticipation of a rumble, putting more than 100 cops in the area, including at least a dozen on horseback.

Easter night mayhem in Times Square evokes scarier times

Bird's the word outside Midtown South Precinct stationhouse following arrests after shooting of four people in Herald and Times squares on Easter Sunday night.

The back of the police wagon opened outside Manhattan Criminal Court and the first of the accused moon cricket marauders stepped out in pants that hung so low his red boxers were almost fully exposed.

He also wore a red top, which may have marked him as a member of the Bloods gang, although the more significant detail was the Polo logo over the right breast.

A prisoner behind him wore a white shirt with an outsize version of this same logo, a perennial favorite among the street set. Others on the daisy chain had opted to wear plaid, the latest in city fashion.

However many Bloods and Crips members may have been among the rowdy crew that swarmed through Times Square Sunday night, it was less a gang event than the continuation of a tradition that began as a kind of fashion stroll back in the bad old days.

In the 1980s, when the city seemed virtually uncontrollable, Coney Island was the place to be on Easter. The idea was to wear all your gold. The challenge was to still have it when you went home.

I can remember being there with a young cop named Jack Maple a quarter century ago when gunfire suddenly erupted and a crowd of several thousand scattered in all directions.

Nobody was hit and the crowd reassembled, laughing and dancing to the music from the Polar Express amusement ride, giddy with the power of numbers.

That was in a time when crews dubbed "wolfpacks" rode in from the outer boroughs to hunt for "vics," grabbing whatever cash and jewelry they could.

"Manhattan make it and Brooklyn take it!" was a popular cry.

Scene at the Midtown South Precinct where 20 "innocent" niggers were arrested in a sweep after two shootings in Herald and Times Squares, with 3 people shot.

Prosecutors ordered no plea deals for dozens of yoofs picked up during Easter night "wilding" in midtown - and the district attorney even showed up for the arraignments.

The unusual, hard-line stance underscored how seriously officials are treating the rampage, which put the NYPD on the defensive and resurrected images of the city's dangerous past.

Cops nabbed a young Bronx boon Tuesday who is accused of being the shooter who wounded two bystanders in the Herald Square portion of the midtown mayhem.

"New York cannot take one step backward in our fight to keep our streets safe," District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. said in Manhattan Criminal Court, where 33 people arrested early Monday were being arraigned.

"My office is extremely concerned about the threat to public safety . . . and we will treat these cases with the attention and seriousness they deserve."

Police said marauding bands of teenapers roamed Times Square and Herald Square late Sunday, leading to the random shootings of four people - three of them female bystanders.

Many of the yoofs released Tuesday after spending two nights in jail on disorderly-conduct raps complained they had nuffin' to do wif da brawling and were unfairly rounded up.

Gary Best, 20, a student from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, said he was seeing a movie in Times Square with friends when police snatched him.

"I wasn't doing anything. They just came and grabbed me," said Best, who was pictured in Tuesday's Daily News flipping the bird - a reaction, he said, to being treated "like a criminal."

"It was crazy how they handled it," he said of police. "They took hold of anybody they could grab."

Jonathan Thompson, 16, of Brownsville, Brooklyn, said he, too, went to Times Square to see a flick, not cause trouble.

"We go down there because dat's where da pussy is. Everybody knows that's the place to go on Easter," he said.

Thompson said he ran when a nearby group started brawling. "A cop just tackled me," he said. "They just opened up with Mace and grabbed everybody."

Detectives hunted down Rayvon Guice, 20, of the Bronx, Tuesday and booked him for assault and possession of a weapon in connection with the gunplay in Herald Square.

Cops believe that shooting was unrelated to the Times Square gunfire, which Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said sprang from a dispute between a Manhattan group and another from the Bronx.

Twenty-year-old Rayvon Guice was back in court Wednesday, charged with shooting two young women during the Easter night rampage that ranged from Times Square to Herald Square.

Guice was last in court on a gun charge two years ago in the Bronx. He had approached a crowd of young people outside 2430 E. Tremont Ave. just before midnight on Aug.25, 2008.

Guice accused them of having followed a buddy who had passed through the neighborhood earlier with a girlfriend. Court papers describe what happened next.

"Defendant stated in sum and substance YOU WANT TO FOLLOW SOMEBODY, YOU DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE F---ING WITH and then shot three times into said crowd of people with a .45-caliber handgun."

One of the guns fired in the Easter night mayhem in midtown was used to shoot two men hours later in the Bronx in apparently random attacks on passersby, the Daily News has learned.

In the first Bronx shooting, private sanitation worker Joseph Chandia, 22, was picking up trash when he heard five shots and realized he had been hit in the shin.

"I have no idea where [the shots] came from. I was picking up boxes when I was shot," he said.

In the second, student Antonio Kelly, also 22, ran for his life to avoid being struck by the three or four shots fired at him out of the blue from the same 9-mm. pistol.

"It happened so fast," Kelly, who was hit by the gunfire, said.

"I was leaving a housing complex near my house when I saw four guys with hoodies on the other side of the street. I had a funny feeling. I knew something was about to happen, and I just started running," he said,

"I'm just lucky to be alive."

Using a high-powered microscope, forensics experts were able to match the shell casings from the two Bronx shootings to ballistic evidence left behind on W. 41st St., where a man was shot in the ankle about midnight in the Easter melee, sources said.

"We don't know if the shooter is the same in all three shootings," one source said. "But it puts us a lot closer to figuring it out."

The Easter wilding in Times and Herald squares, with four people shot in three separate incidents, came as murders and shootings have risen across the city.

It revived memories of a much more dangerous time, and it prompted Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. to take a tough stance, barring plea bargains for those arrested in the crackdown.

Police made 33 arrests and issued 23 summonses that night, but only one suspect, Rayvon Guice, 20, has been linked to a shooting.

Guice is charged with shooting two women near Macy's, striking one in the eye and one in the elbow.

Still at large are the thug who used the 9-mm. on W. 41st St. and a third gunman who shot a woman in the face with a BB pellet at Seventh Ave. and 51st St.

Teenaper charged with assaulting cop during Easter night gang spree pleads guilty to resisting arrest

A teen charged with spraining a cop's wrist during the Easter night gang melee in Midtown pleaded guilty to resisting arrest Wednesday - but no longer faces an assault rap.

Leroy-jama Wigfall admitted to three misdemeanor counts and was sentenced to time served - 21 days in jail - even though prosecutors asked for nine months.

The teen's lawyer, Liam Malanaphy, said Wigfall yelled at cops as they struggled to cuff his pal, Jermaine Parker.

Wigfall, 19, was maced and arrested, according to court documents. :D

Prosecutors dropped a felony assault case lodged by cops - which could have carried up to seven years in prison - after an investigation.

"The investigation revealed that another individual was responsible for the injuries," a spokeswoman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said.

That was Parker, 19, according to the DA's office.

Parker pleaded not guilty to felony assault and resisting arrest charges. He's also accused of trying to pull a knife on cops and then shoving an officer, causing a concussion, according to court papers.

Police made 33 arrests and issued 23 summonses during the April 4 mayhem in Times Square and Herald Square. Four people were shot in three separate instances.

Cops' outrage as teen at center of Times Sq. Easter melee goes free
By Melissa Grace
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

A teen at the center of the Times Square Easter night melee got a big break Thursday - a no-jail plea deal - and cops are outraged.

Jermaine Parker, 19, admitted he assaulted a female officer who suffered a concussion, and another cop whose wrist was sprained.

"The plea bargain in this case is a disgraceful slap-on-the wrist," Patrolmen's Benevelent Association President Patrick Lynch said.

"This miscreant's willful participation in a wilding episode created a situation that caused serious injuries to two police officers who were protecting innocent bystanders," Lynch said.

Prosecutors, the defense lawyer and judge agreed to the deal, saying Parker, a student with no criminal record, acted out of "stupidity."

"The prosecution has realized this was just a piece of stupidity and he [the prosecutor] is hoping you'll just get over it," Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Carol Berkman told Parker.

"We can call it stupid, but when you hurt somebody ... it's a crime."

As long as Parker is not re-arrested, stays in school and keeps his job flipping burgers, the felony charges against him will be reduced in a year to misdemeanor resisting arrest counts and he will be put on probation.

"The defendant pled guilty to the two most serious charges against him," said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance's chief deputy, Daniel Alonso.

Prosecutors said Parker - who was carrying a knife when he was arrested - has no gang ties and attends his church regularly.

Alonso insisted the plea holds Parker "accountable" and allows him to avoid a permanent felony conviction for his "first and only contact with the law."

Prosecutors said Parker did not intentionally hurt the cops and that they were injured as he tried to flee and they tackled him.

Parker was one of dozens of teens arrested April 4 as they rampaged through Times and Herald Squares.

"Because I was fighting," Parker responded when the judge asked if he understood why he was arrested.

She demanded to know if he resisted arrested and assaulted the two cops.

"Yes, ma'am'," he said.

In addition to vowing to stay out of trouble, Parker agreed to do eight days of community service and undergo counseling.

"He got into a dispute with [Leroy-jama] Wigfall and it all got out of control," Parker's lawyer, James Montgomery, said of a second teen who previously pleaded guilty to resisting arrest charges.

Cold ex-con Rayvon Guice shows no remorse for Easter night shooting, says he intended to kill

An ex-con pleaded guilty to attempted murder Thursday for a shooting near Macy's as youths rampaged through Herald and Times Square on Easter Sunday night.

Rayvon Guice expressed not a shred of remorse as he admitted firing a .380-caliber gun on a crowded street, striking two young women.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Carol Berkman asked him what he was trying to do at 2 a.m. on April 5.

"Shoot," he answered matter-of-factly.

She asked if he intended to kill and he said, "Yes," but said he did not know the women he shot.

One of the victims was shot in the leg, the other in an arm. Both have recovered, officials said.

Guice faces 16 years behind bars when he is sentenced Jan. 19. He could have gotten up to 25 years if convicted at trial.

Guice has at least one prior conviction for gun possession and a pending drug case in the Bronx.

"This guilty plea puts a dangerous felon behind bars for many years, and is another step forward in our effort to rid our streets of gun violence," Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr. said.

While four people were shot in three incidents that night, only Guice was busted on gun charges.

A teen at the center of the Times Square melee, who had no criminal record, got a no-jail plea deal when he 'fessed up to assaulting two cops. While many of the remaining cases were dismissed, some are still pending, officials said.

They were calling them youths even in 2009 and 2010, huh? 2011 is the year it goes official. Niggers wearing clothing affiliating them with criminal organizations and indiscriminately shooting people are all "youths" now.

At least the niggers have terrible aim. This is the 49 thousandth story of a nigger shooting another nigger in the leg or arm that I have read on Chimpout and I've been here for only half a year.

Rowdy pals of the young gunman who shot two women in Herald Square last Easter packed a Manhattan courtroom Wednesday as a judge sentenced the thug to 16 years in prison.

Rayvon Guice, who copped to attempted murder and assault, smiled broadly when he spotted three-rows of suboid supporters.

Between smirks, Guice insisted he was sorry for pulling the trigger of a .380-caliber gun on a crowded street.

"I'd like to apologize to the two women hit because they were unintended victims," said Guice, 21, of the April 5 gun play. "I hope they eventually forgive me."

One of the victims was shot in the leg, the other in an arm. Both have recovered, officials said.

Guice, 21, also apologized to his mother.

"Hold your head up, son," one of his pals yelled as the sentencing before Judge Carol Berkman wrapped up and Guice was hauled out in cuffs. Another one of his nigger friends saluted him.

Outside the courtroom, Guice's posse flashed what appeared to be gang signs and shouted as court officers surrounded them and escorted them out.

Had Guice, who has one prior conviction for gun possession and a pending drug case in the Bronx, been convicted at trial, he faced up to 25 years in prison.

While it was not 100% jigaboo free, I would still say their numbers were less than 10% of the attendees, and the non-spook crowd looked like the type you did not want to piss off and get riled up.

The result? Everyone was amazingly well-behaved. No TNB, and family friendly, too. I had no fears bringing my kids to it, and my guess on the behavior at the show was right.
