I ran across this on another website:
"'Miracle at St. Anna,' a novel-based movie about a group of African-American soldiers trapped in a small village behind German lines in Italy."
I beg your fucking pardon? My uncles were there, and they told me about the army niggers. They told me that the only thing niggers were considered good for was working as cooks and supply truck drivers. With very few exceptions, they weren't allowed anywhere near combat. They were held in such high regard by the military that when books--which had been collected in "book drives" back home--were handed out to the soldiers, the niggers were given comic books. So yeah. A story about a nigger unit trapped behind enemy lines? That's about as likely as niggers flying...oh, wait, I forgot. That really happened.

Must be fiction.
I would have yelled at the Nazis, "Die Schwartzen sind dort drueben! Sie rauben eine weiss Maedchen!" (The niggers are over there! They're raping a white girl!)

Yep. It's most definitely fiction. The original post I read it on in fact said so. As to niggers and the Wehrmacht, I read an account of the first time some German soldiers encountered niggers--and it's certainly reliable because as I recall it was written by Waffen SS General Hubert Meyer, who eventually was the commanding officer of 12. SS Panzerdivision "Hitlerjugend." To the best of my recollection, early in the war they encountered a unit of French colonial native troops, and their initial reaction was that the niggers scared the bejeebus out of them--so badly that some of them were seriously considering leaving (which was pretty much unheard of for them). Very quickly, however, they came to their senses and proceeded to do what they did very well, namely kill everyone in front of them. Having learned exactly what the niggers were made of, they henceforth held them in utter contempt as soldiers.

I didn't know about that unit. Thanks for teaching me something new. Somehow I'm not surprised that the G.I. jigaboos were outmatched by the Italian Army, which as far as I know was pretty much outclassed by anything BUT niggers, e.g., their resounding success against the Ethiopian spearchuckers, although (and correct me if I'm mistaken as I'm by no means an authority on the Italian Army), I seem to recall reading something to the effect that their Alpine and Bersaglieri units were considered to be elite. But then again, as you point out, the Italians were being supported by three battalions of Germans.

Edit: Here's a photo from the Wiki link that had me howling with laughter. It shows the brave coons with a captured German soldier. They look to me as if they're scared shitless of him: check out the one behind him manning the machine gun who also has his hand on his trusty .45, and, along with his fellow chimp with the carbine, is keeping an eagle-eye on the German. The German, on the other hand, judging from the look on his face, seems almost amused by the heavily-armed monkeys around him.

As a historian of the 2nd World War, I will have to say this about Italian troops-they were seriously outmatched by almost all of their enemies-on the Eastern Front against the Soviet /Russian forces, the Italians didn't have the armored support that the Germans had, and accordingly they were soundly defeated time and time again. Against the British and American forces in North Africa, Sicily, and later in Italy, they had inept leaders who were placed in a supervisory position due to their social rank/position, and in all reality didn't really care about their men or have the men's best interest at heart. The industrial base of Italy wasn't really prepared to support a 20th century mechanized military machine, so that the majority of the Italian forces had to march from battle to battle, much as their Roman ancesters had. When Italian soldiers were properly organized, supplied, and led by experiencd leadership, they gave as good as they got. It was none other than Erwin Rommel himself who praised the acheivments of his Italian troops in the North African campaign, and he was quoted to have said about them "I'd rather have an army of rabbits lead by a Lion than have an army of lions lead by a rabbit". They performed well when supported by German troops(who had access to the right equiptment), but in all reallity their hearts were truly never into Mussolini"s grand schemes of Italian expansion.
At least they were better than the nogs who were drafted into the US Army, who drove trucks, dug latrines, moved supplies, ect., ie purely service troops who were never intended to engage in combat with enemy forces. On the few occasions that black troops did fight the enemy, the generally gave fair to poor service, and most black historians generally blame the racial policies of the US Army at that time for this ("it all be YT'S fault)

Well now. It's a pleasure to meet a historian of that momentous conflict. This discussion seems to be heading off on all sorts of tangents, but as long as we're on the subject, here are a couple of points in regard to what I said about the Italians in World War II:
First, their leaders were indeed worthless: they would dine on delicacies while their troops went hungry, and when the shooting started, they were generally inclined to lead a dashing charge to the rear. The soldiers' hearts were indeed not in it, and, on the eastern front, they lacked sufficient anti-tank weapons to repel the Soviet onslaught. All that being said, however, my point remains the same, namely, that they were pretty much worthless--though certainly our own G.I. jigaboos were considerably worse. Once again with reference to the eastern front, had the Italians--along with the Rumanians, who were pretty much in the same boat as to equipment, though generally acknowledged among the Germans who were there to have exhibited much greater courage--had they not crumbled and immediately run away outside of Stalingrad and thus abandoned the left flank of the German front, the Sixth Army would not have been so easily encircled and ultimately destroyed. To support what I say I refer you to the memoirs of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, Commander of the Don Army Group.
Second, as to Erwin Rommel. He was largely a creation of the very effective German propaganda machine, which, as such machines always are, was in need of a hero. He was, in my opinion, which is based on and in agreement with much of the German general staff, less than heroic. He was less than brilliant in North Africa (which is not meant to take anything away from the Landsers of the Afrika Korps), and, when the war there was lost and it was time to depart, he quite happily sailed for home--pursuant to orders, of course--and abandoned his army, loyal to the end, behind to die or enter captivity. Later, when he was in command of the Westwall preceding the allied landings at Normandy, he nearly single-handedly--and in sharp disagreement with eminent generals such as Guderian--concentrated the heavy coastal batteries in the wrong places, and then, on the day of the invasion, he was away in Germany for, as I recall, his birthday. Although he was certainly not alone in his erroneous handling of the preparations for the invasion, he equally certainly bore much of the responsibility. All of which is simply to say that what he had to say about the Italian army is of little consequence, and possibly not even reflective of his opinion but that of the propagandists for political or strategic reasons of their own.

I should have known. And I'm sure they've been misled, oppressed, and abandoned by their heartless, racist, and altogether inept white officers. Ah, once again the plight of the ever-wise, all-knowing darky. Spook Lee needs to quit--and what the fuck is "A Spook Lee Joint" supposed to mean, anyway?
