Mpls. sees spike in sexual assault reports
A spike in sexual assault reports in Minneapolis is alarming to some, but comforting for others.
In the last 72 hours, there have been at least eight possible rapes reported in the city. That's almost as many as an average week. But the surge is the exact opposite of more long-term trends.
On Tuesday, a 46-year-old woman said a man punched her, dragged her next to a house on Oliver Avenue North and raped her. Just four blocks away and three hours later, a 24-year-old woman reported another rape.
"Since spring, they are up considerably from the prior months," said Sgt. Jesse Garcia of the Minneapolis Police Department.
According to the Minneapolis Police Department’s sex crimes unit, 11 people report a sexual assault in an average week. But since May, the numbers have surged to 33 -- three times the average -- for the last week in June and for the first week in July.
