BARTOW | Lawyers are expected to begin selecting jurors today for the trial of a 20-year-old Lakeland man accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and her new lover.

Monquelle Anderson faces two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Jessica Upton, 18, and Aundre Barnes, 29.

If convicted as charged, he could face the death penalty.

Anderson was arrested without further incident and is charged with first-degree murder and possession of a short-barreled shotgun.

Little is known about Anderson and the two victims, except that he and Upton had only recently gotten acquainted. According to Bailey, Upton brought men to their apartment often, which is what drove Bailey to start hunting for a new residence.

While she hadn’t removed her belongings, she’d been spending more and more nights at her boyfriend’s.

“I knew something bad was going to happen,” Bailey said.

It isn’t clear how long Upton and Barnes had been friends, but Bailey said her roommate had only met Anderson within the past week or so at a nearby Arby’s restaurant. She said Anderson’s name was added to their lease earlier this week, and he’d been sleeping in the living room, where he kept his few possessions — a television, video games and clothes.

Barnes has an extensive criminal record that includes charges of drug dealing. On Jan. 17 an arrest warrant was issued for Barnes, based on a parole violation, according to the Florida Department of Corrections’ Web site.
