“I know his character,” said Delannie Lawn, of Grand Rapids, who says she is nine months pregnant with Hood’s son. “He would have never raised a gun to harm anyone, but rather pulled it (the gun) out to get rid of it.
“He had the gun for protection because of the lifestyle he used to lead. I am angry because I think it was very unnecessary to shoot him several times like that.”
Gabriel HoodGrand Rapids police say a 15-year force veteran shot Hood, 33, after the fugitive struggled with the officer, ran away, then pointed a 9 mm handgun at him.
The officer, who has not been identified and is on paid administrative leave, ordered the suspect to drop the weapon when they were in between two houses and Hood could not scale a fence that boxed him in.
Lawn, 27, insists Hood was a family man trying hard to get his life together after prison.
“He wasn’t this horrible individual who was always causing havoc,” Lawn said. “He was a very loving person who wanted to see the birth of his son.
“He just made some bad choices in recent months,” she said.
Hood held down a job after being paroled until an injury prevented him from working, she said.
Lawn said Hood, who has two daughters, was trying to provide for his family.
