PHILADELPHIA - It's the cartoon that's had everything talking this week.

The cartoon published Tuesday in the Inquirer depicts the principal of South Philadelphia High School asleep while in command of the school.

In early December, Asian students at the school became the target of racially-motivated attacks.

The cartoon set off a firestorm of controversy, and now the NAACP is getting involved.

Philadelphia NAACP president Jerry Mondesire tells Fox 29 they have not ruled out a potential libel suit.

"So, to draw a cartoon that shows her sleeping at her desk while the school is falling apart, it's completely erroneous and gives a false impression, and it basically libels an African-American woman who's in a very tough situation,"

Jerry Mondesire says their decision is expected in the next few weeks.

Inquirer publisher Brian Tierney said in a statement that he supports the cartoonist. It read in part, "In a battle of credibility between Jerry Mondesire and Tony Auth (cartoonist), I'm going to go with Tony Auth all the time." :rock

Whenever someone starts a suit like this, the lawyer is paid several thousand dollars up front. And that is just to begin the case. Newspapers and all big press outlets have attorneys on staff or on retainer who are experts on libel and slander. It is safe to say the newspaper's attorneys vetted the cartoon before it was published.
