It was a coincidence that after reading nutnice's summary of Congo in the Chimpout Nigger World Atlas, I came across a review of a book on that wretched country. Details and my editing:
BLOOD RIVER
A Journey to Africa's Broken Heart
By Tim Butcher
In 1951, Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and their Hollywood crew were able to travel around by train( courtesy of the Belgian colonials )to film The African Queen. Fast forward 50+ years and the author of this book, Tim Butcher finds those same railway tracks buried under leaf mulch and soil. He said, " I had discovered evidence of a modern world that had tried but failed to establish itself in the Congo....I was travelling through a place where the hands of the clock spin not forwards but backwards. " Herein lies the tragedy of the Congo - development in reverse.
Apart from railways, there were also roads and airstrips in the old days. The Congo River was navigable and boats plied their trade on its waters. Now, the roads are mere tracks and the boats are rusting hulks on the river banks. Movement by any means around the country is highly dangerous.
Blood River asks big and difficult questions( well, difficult for them but simple for chimpouters ). What on earth went wrong in Africa? Why do so many African leaders seem to care so little about their fellow niggers?
Tim's argument is that the failure of the Congo over the last 50 years cannot entirely be blamed on colonial rule. " The Malaysian naval officer on my river boat was right to ask why former European colonies in Asia have been able to develop since independence while those in Africa have regressed. "
Searching for the answers leads inevitably to a consideration of where nigger rule has ended up and how the niggers have deployed that power.
