JONESBORO, Ga. -- Clayton County police are racing to catch a serial rapist before he can attack again.
The most recent victim was a 16-year-old girl sexually assaulted in her bedroom at the Marquis Mt. Zion Apartments in Morrow.
Clayton County Police are handing out “Wanted” flyers in communities throughout the county. They hope someone can lead them to the attacker.
Police say the suspect climbs into homes through unlocked windows so he rape women and girls. They said he could be responsible for several rapes and assaults across the county beginning in 2008.
People in one neighborhood told CBS Atlanta News and police they had seen a strange man with features similar to the suspect.
Sadie Green said she saw someone who fit the description of the serial rapist police are looking for outside of her window last week.
“It’s very frightening. The guy had on a baseball cap [like this],” Green said looking over a sketch of the suspect.
Even though attacks have been going on for more than a year, police say they were just recently able to connect them.
“That puts the odds in our favor,” said Sgt. Marc Richards of the Clayton County Police Department. “By the law of averages, things are going to swing back in our favor and it shouldn’t be long before we catch [the suspect].”
Witnesses and victims describe the suspect as 5 feet 7 inches tall and about 30 years old. He may also have bad teeth that he hides with his lip while talking.
Clayton County Police are scheduling community meetings across the county. The meetings are to inform residents about how they can protect themselves and hopefully generate leads.
The next meeting is set for Feb. 24, 6 p.m. at the Clayton County Police Department Headquarters located at 7911 North McDonough Street in Jonesboro, Ga.
Police are encouraging people to keep their doors and windows locked and if necessary put bars in the windows. They also said women should not be walking by themselves.
